The line between what words mean (semantics) and what speakers mean (pragmatics) is one of the most debated boundaries in linguistics.

When someone says “It’s cold in here,” the semantics is a statement about temperature. The pragmatics might be a request to close the window. When someone asks “Do you know what time it is?” the semantic answer is “yes” or “no.” The pragmatic answer is the actual time.

Where exactly semantics ends and pragmatics begins — and whether the boundary is sharp or blurry — remains an active area of research. But the distinction itself highlights something important about human communication: we almost never say exactly what we mean, and understanding language requires understanding both what’s said and what’s implied.
