What Is Complexity Theory?

Study every individual neuron in a brain, and you still won’t understand consciousness. Analyze every trader on Wall Street, and you still can’t predict the next market crash. Map every species in a rainforest ecosystem, and you still can’t predict how the ecosystem will respond to losing one of them.

The difference between “complicated” and “complex” is the difference between a Boeing 747 and a flock of starlings. The airplane has millions of parts, but its behavior is deterministic — the same inputs produce the same outputs. The starling flock has a few hundred birds following simple rules (stay close but not too close, match your neighbors’ direction, avoid predators), yet the flock produces mesmerizing, ever-changing patterns that no single bird controls or even perceives.
